Difference between data validity and data integrity

We’re now entering a new world in which data may be more important than software. This is the fact of life, especially for an organization! The role of data in an organization has always been a vital part so that the business can gain profits and earn credibility. Hence the data should be examined thoroughly to ensure accuracy.

The two terms of data validity and data integrity are beneficial stages where data is checked. So, let’s understand the difference between data validity and data integrity.

Data Validity and Data Integrity Are Not the Same

First of all, the basic understanding of these two terms is that they are highly dependent on the data so that business can take proper decisions. The second understanding comes what these two terms addresses. Data integrity addresses protection information from accidental or malicious alteration or destruction whereas Data Validation establishes compliance with security specifications and requirements.

Let’s understand more with an example. For example, errors in data validity are created by human beings - usually data entry personnel - who enter, for example,13/25/2010, by mistake, while errors in data integrity are caused by bugs in computer programs that, for example, cause the overwriting of some of the data in the database, when somebody attempts to retrieve a blank value from the database.

Data Validity

Data validation determines compliance with security specifications and requirements with the help of tests and evaluations which enhances correctness and reasonableness of data.  The second term which we can use for data validation is the “human being” or we can say that it’s all about the correctness and reasonableness of data.

Data Integrity

Data integrity relates to the validity of data for the period of time during which it is relevant from that source. As the second term for data validity is “human being”, the second term for data integrity is “bugs in computer programs”.

You can see how these two terms can be bewildered and intermixed since, at a single point in time, they are importantly identical in meaning. But, they possess the same purpose. They both reduce the risk to the agency system from malicious software and intrusions, or from accidental alteration or destruction.

Why are data integrity and data validity more important than ever to organizations?

It is very important to understand that data is a very valuable asset to any organizations. And if there is a lack of data quality management, there will be an increase in poor decisions, additional costs, inefficiencies, which no one would like to see that disaster.

Once your database is precise, the fun can really begin. Timely and precise data can be used to build models for ideal customer profiles and decision-making buyer personas within your current database. It can also be used for highly personalized marketing efforts to your audience.
